How to Explain Easter to Your Muslim Friends

“What is Easter?” asked one of my Afghan international student friends.

We sat around a lovely table of food, discussing the day at their university apartment. I had stopped by to bring dates, vegetables, yoghurt, and meat for them to make Iftar meals in the evenings. The month-long Ramadan began April 1. Each evening, they break the fast with these special meals.

“Oh you must stay for Iftar! We will cook it for you!” They eagerly asked me.

So I did.

We broke their fast with dates and juice, and when the sun went down, they prayed a beautiful, heartfelt prayer. We ate tender beef in a special rice dish, a delicious salad with cucumbers, tomatoes and olive oil, and another leafy green salad (their moms would be so proud of how healthy they cooked), and we sipped special Afghan tea, as we talked about school, and their families, their future, and Ramadan.

I invited them for an evening Easter dinner in our home and that’s when they asked me to explain the holiday.

“Easter is one of the greatest celebrations, both for me and for you. Allah did something amazing by his power, that affects me and you so much! It has to do with Jesus, Isa al Masih, peace be on him, and the way that he fully submitted to God.”

They leaned in to listen.

Time out.

I think it would be easier if I modeled what I said to my Afghan friends live on video, so that you can watch, as if you were sitting around the table with us.

So. I just did a short FB LIVE video for you to watch. I explained Easter, the full submission of Jesus the Messiah, Isa al Masih, to God, Allah, by becoming the final sacrifice, corbani. He took all of our shame on him as an act of full surrender to the will of God, which gave us full forgiveness and honor in the sight of God.

But that’s not the end.

Three days later (when we celebrate Easter), Allah raised Isa al Masih to life again in a body that will never die, and made him the King, the Caliph, of the Kingdom of God, the Malicoot Allah.

Jesus, Isa al Masih, reigns and rules now through God’s people who also fully submit to Allah by following and obeying Isa al Masih.

Watch this video, share it, and let me know if you try to explain Easter to your Muslim friends too.
